When do UPS batteries need replacement?
Most sealed valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) UPS batteries have a service life of about 3 to 5 years at 25 °C (77 °F). Higher temperatures shorten that life significantly. Replace batteries when:
- The UPS shows a "replace battery" alarm or fails a self-test
- Runtime on battery is noticeably shorter than it was when new
- Batteries are swollen, leaking, corroded, or unusually hot
- Batteries are at or past the end of their expected service life

Batteries and battery trays bought on their own, without our installation, have no formal warranty, because we can't control the environment they are installed in. If a problem comes up within a reasonable time after delivery, contact us and we will work with you. Batteries that come inside a UPS you buy from us are covered by that unit's warranty.
Can UPS batteries be replaced without shutting down?
Many rack-mount and modular UPS systems have hot-swappable batteries, which can be replaced while the UPS stays online and continues to power the load. Some tower and three-phase systems require the UPS to be placed in maintenance bypass first. We confirm the method for your model before the visit.
How are old UPS batteries disposed of?
Lead-acid UPS batteries must not go in regular trash. They are recyclable and should be sent to a battery recycler. Lithium-ion UPS batteries also require specialized recycling. When GreenlightUPS replaces your batteries, we take the old ones back and recycle them free of charge.
