APC Smart-UPS VT Discontinued: What Now?
Guide · GreenlightUPS
Schneider Electric has discontinued the APC Smart-UPS VT (and its later Schneider-branded twin, the Galaxy 3500) and points buyers to the Galaxy VS range as the replacement. That doesn't mean your VT has to come out. Discontinued means you can't order a new one from APC; service and spare parts continue for years, and the parts that wear out (battery modules and power modules) are still widely available. For most sites, the right move is to keep a healthy VT running and plan a replacement on your own schedule, not during an outage.
What "discontinued" means for the Smart-UPS VT
Schneider Electric tracks two dates for every model:
- End of commercialization is the last day Schneider takes an order for a new unit. The US 208V VT models were discontinued years ago (for example, the SUVT15KF2B2S on Dec 31, 2020), and Schneider's Smart-UPS VT range page now shows the whole range as discontinued.
- End of standard service is the last day the manufacturer will repair the model or supply spare parts. For the SUVT15KF2B2S, Schneider lists Dec 31, 2031.
In plain terms: the VT is out of production, but it isn't unsupported, and parts are also available outside the factory. That's where an independent shop like GreenlightUPS comes in.
Why so many Smart-UPS VT systems are still in service
The Smart-UPS VT is a three-phase, double-conversion online UPS for server rooms, small data centers, retail and industrial loads. Most units in the field are 10 to 30kVA at 208V three-phase, in tower or rack frames, with 480V rack versions that use a step-down transformer. It was built with service in mind:
- Hot-swappable battery modules, the same modular batteries used across the Symmetra PX and Galaxy 3500 family, so a weak string can be swapped while the UPS keeps running
- A plug-in power module matched to the frame's kVA (10, 15, 20 or 30kVA), so a failed module is a swap, not a rebuild on site
- Built-in automatic and maintenance bypass, so the UPS can be serviced while the load stays powered
Because the parts that wear out are replaceable, a VT with fresh batteries and a good power module can keep protecting a server room for years after APC stops selling it.
Option 1: Keep your Smart-UPS VT running
If the frame is healthy and your load still fits, this is usually the lowest-cost, lowest-risk choice.
Batteries. Batteries are the part that fails most often in any UPS. Plan on replacing battery modules about every 3 to 5 years in a cool room, and sooner in a warm one (our UPS battery replacement guide explains why heat matters so much). Replace the modules the UPS reports as weak or faulted. Our SYBTU1-PLP battery modules are refurbished trays fitted with brand-new batteries, and they fit the Smart-UPS VT, Symmetra PX and Galaxy 3500. If you'd rather not do it yourself, our technicians handle on-site UPS battery replacement, and we recycle the old batteries for free.
Power modules. When the VT flags a power module fault, swap in a matching module: the SUVTPM10KF-P (10kVA), SUVTPM15KF-P (15kVA), SUVTPM20KF-P (20kVA) or SUVTPM30KF-P (30kVA). We completely rebuild every VT power module in-house and test it before it ships, and each carries a 1-year GreenlightUPS warranty. They're sold as core exchange: we ship the module with a return label, and you send your failed one back. New Open Box modules are also listed for the 15, 20 and 30kVA sizes.
More runtime. If you need more battery time rather than more capacity, the SUVTBXR0B6S extended-run cabinet adds six more rows of battery modules.
Maintenance. A preventive maintenance visit once or twice a year catches weak batteries, failing fans and module faults before an outage does. Our technicians service Smart-UPS VT and Galaxy 3500 systems nationwide, including units bought elsewhere, and ship-in repair is available. See APC Symmetra & Smart-UPS VT service and three-phase UPS service.
Option 2: Replace it with another Smart-UPS VT or Galaxy 3500
If the frame itself is damaged, or you need a matching system for another room, a refurbished or New Open Box VT is often the fastest and cheapest swap. Same footprint, same wiring, same power modules and battery modules you already stock, so there's nothing to redesign.
Every complete UPS we sell, New or Refurbished, ships with brand-new batteries and is load tested in-house before it leaves, and complete systems carry a 1-year GreenlightUPS warranty. Popular frames include the SUVTP15KF2B2S (15kVA, 208V), the SUVTP30KF4B4S (30kVA, 208V) and the SUVTR20KF5B5S rack system. The Galaxy 3500 is the same platform under Schneider's name, so a New Open Box unit like the G35T20KF4B4S uses the same modules. See the full range, including 480V rack versions, on our Smart-UPS VT page.
Option 3: Move to a current platform
When it's time to leave the VT behind, there are three realistic paths.
Galaxy VS (Schneider's named replacement)
Schneider lists the Galaxy VS as the replacement for the VT; for example, the 15kVA SUVTF15KB2F frame maps to the Galaxy VS 15kW 208V (GVSUPS15KB4FS). The Galaxy VS is a current, modular, double-conversion three-phase UPS with internal modular battery strings and full factory support. We stock Galaxy VS units, such as this refurbished Galaxy VS 50kVA, and can source other ratings.
Symmetra PX
If you want power-module redundancy (N+1) inside one cabinet, a Symmetra PX such as the 20kVA ISX20K20F is a natural step up, and it uses the same battery modules as your VT, so spares carry over.
A smaller single-phase UPS
Some VT sites have shrunk to a few racks. If your measured load now fits under 10kVA and your equipment can run single-phase, an APC Smart-UPS SRT online UPS can be simpler and cheaper. Have an electrician confirm the change in feed.
Whichever way you go, size the new UPS from your real load, not the VT's nameplate. Our UPS sizing guide walks through it, and our installation team can handle the swap. On-site startup is available as a separately priced add-on.
How to decide
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| VT is healthy, load fits, only the batteries are old | Keep it: replace the battery modules |
| The power module has failed | Keep it: core exchange the SUVTPM module |
| Frame damaged, or you need a second identical system | Refurbished or New Open Box VT / Galaxy 3500 |
| You want a current, factory-supported three-phase UPS | Galaxy VS |
| You want N+1 power-module redundancy and to reuse your battery spares | Symmetra PX |
| Your load has shrunk to under 10kVA | Smart-UPS SRT (check the feed with an electrician) |
| Budget is tight and the site can't take downtime now | Keep the VT running, plan the replacement for a scheduled window |
Before you call: what to have ready
- The model number from the label (for example SUVTP20KF2B4S or SUVTR30KG5B5S)
- What the display shows: battery or power module alarms and any fault messages
- How many battery modules are installed, and whether you have an extended-run cabinet
- Your input voltage (208V or 480V) and current load in kVA or kW (the display shows it)
- Whether you want parts only, on-site service, or ship-in repair
FAQ
Is the APC Smart-UPS VT discontinued?
Yes. Schneider Electric lists the Smart-UPS VT range as discontinued. US 208V models such as the SUVT15KF2B2S were discontinued on Dec 31, 2020, and Schneider lists end of standard service for that model on Dec 31, 2031.
What replaced the Smart-UPS VT?
Schneider names the Galaxy VS range as the replacement. Sites that want N+1 power-module redundancy often move to a Symmetra PX instead.
Is the Galaxy 3500 the same as the Smart-UPS VT?
Yes. The Galaxy 3500 is Schneider's later branding of the same three-phase platform, and the frames, power modules and battery modules interchange.
Can I still get batteries and power modules for a Smart-UPS VT?
Yes. GreenlightUPS stocks SYBTU1-PLP battery modules with brand-new batteries and rebuilt SUVTPM power modules from 10 to 30kVA. Power modules are core exchange with a 1-year warranty.
How often should Smart-UPS VT batteries be replaced?
Plan on about every 3 to 5 years in a cool room, and sooner in a hot room or after frequent outages. Replace the modules the UPS reports as weak or faulted.
Can you service a Smart-UPS VT I bought somewhere else?
Yes. Our technicians service Smart-UPS VT and Galaxy 3500 systems nationwide, including units bought elsewhere, and ship-in repair is available.
