Symmetra PX Battery Replacement: A Practical Guide
The APC Symmetra PX keeps its batteries in slide-in battery units. If you run a Symmetra PX 20, 40 or 80, those units are SYBTU1-PLP. APC groups four of them into one SYBT4 battery string. The same battery hardware is used in the Smart-UPS VT and Galaxy 3500. This guide covers the rule that matters most when you replace them.
How the battery units are arranged
Each battery shelf holds four units in columns A, B, C and D. APC treats them as two pairs: A+B and C+D.
The matched-pairs rule
APC's guidance is clear: the units in A and B must match, and the units in C and D must match. If the two units in a pair are different types, the UPS generates a "mixed battery" fault. You can have different units on the same shelf as long as each pair matches (APC FAQ FA231261).
What this means in practice:
- Replace units in pairs (A+B or C+D), never one unit on its own.
- Don't mix a new unit with an old one in the same pair.
- Plan quantities by pairs when you order.
Planning a replacement
- Find your frame and model on the UPS label (for example SY40K40F).
- Check the display for battery faults and note which shelves and columns are affected.
- Order matched pairs of SYBTU1-PLP units.
- Install by pairs, then confirm the UPS shows no faults.
- Recycle the old units. We take them back for free.
