APC Symmetra LX Is Discontinued: Keep It Running or Replace It?
Guide · GreenlightUPS
Schneider Electric has discontinued the APC Symmetra LX, and its official replacement is the lithium-ion Smart-UPS Modular Ultra. That doesn't mean your LX has to come out. Discontinued means you can't buy a new one from APC; after-sales service and parts continue, and the batteries, power modules and intelligence modules that wear out are still available. For most sites, the right move is to keep a healthy LX running on fresh batteries and good modules, and plan a replacement on your own schedule rather than in an emergency.
What "discontinued" actually means for the Symmetra LX
Schneider Electric has two dates for each model:
- End of commercialization is the last day APC takes an order for a new unit. Schneider's product pages now show Symmetra LX models as discontinued, with dates that vary by model (for example, SYA16K16P on Aug 8, 2026 and SYA12K16P on Oct 8, 2026).
- End of standard service is the last day the manufacturer will repair the model or supply spare parts. That date comes much later. The SYA12K16P, for example, lists end of standard service on Oct 8, 2036.
In plain terms: the Symmetra LX is out of production, but it isn't unsupported. Replacement parts are also widely available outside the factory, and that's where an independent shop like GreenlightUPS comes in.
Why so many Symmetra LX systems are still in service
The LX was built to be kept, not thrown away. It's a double-conversion online UPS for single-phase loads, in 8kVA and 16kVA frames, tower or rack, with 120/208V or 120/240V output. Everything that wears out slides in and out of the front:
- SYBT5 battery modules, hot-swappable while the UPS keeps running
- SYPM4KP power modules (4kVA / 3200W each), added in 4kVA steps for capacity or N+1 redundancy
- The intelligence module (symim5), the controller that runs the system
Because the parts that wear out are all replaceable, a Symmetra LX with fresh batteries and good modules can keep protecting servers, phone systems and lab equipment for years after APC stops selling it.
Option 1: Keep your Symmetra LX running
This is usually the lowest-cost, lowest-risk option if the frame is healthy and your load hasn't outgrown it.
Batteries. Batteries are the part that fails most often in any UPS. Plan on replacing SYBT5 modules about every 3 to 5 years in a cool room, and sooner in a warm one (our UPS battery replacement guide explains why heat matters so much). Replace the modules the UPS reports as faulted. Our refurbished SYBT5 modules are refurbished trays fitted with brand-new batteries and tested before they ship, and a factory-new SymmTools SYBT5 is also available.
Battery communication boards. Each SYBT5 has a small board that talks to the UPS. When a board fails, the module can be rejected even if the batteries are fine. We build new SYBT5 boards in-house (SY5PLUS), and if you'd rather keep your original boards, ship them to us and we'll reprogram them. Very few companies anywhere do this work, and it's one of the main reasons an LX can stay in service long after the factory moves on.
Power modules. If the UPS flags a power module fault, or you lose redundancy, swap in an SYPM4KP. Our refurbished power modules are broken down, checked, rebuilt and tested in-house, and carry a 1-year GreenlightUPS warranty. Individually sold power modules are core exchange: we ship you the module with a return label, and you send your old one back. A New Open Box SYPM4KP is also listed.
Intelligence module. The symim5 is refurbished, carries a 1-year warranty, and is also sold as a core exchange part.
Full revitalization package. If several parts are aging at once, we can revitalize the whole system in one go. We supply a complete set of upgraded parts as a package: SYBT5 battery modules with brand-new batteries, SYPM4KP power modules and a symim5 intelligence module. Your LX gets fresh batteries and rebuilt modules for far less than a new platform, and you deal with one supplier and one order. Our technicians can install the package for you as part of a service visit.
More runtime. If you need more battery time rather than more capacity, an extended-run frame such as the SYARMXR9B9 13U cabinet adds battery slots. The frame is sold on its own, with SYBT5 modules as an add-on.
Maintenance. A preventive maintenance visit once or twice a year catches weak batteries, failing fans and module faults before an outage does. Our technicians service Symmetra LX systems nationwide, including units bought elsewhere. See APC Symmetra service.
Option 2: Replace it with another Symmetra LX
If your LX frame is damaged, or you want a second system for another room, a refurbished or New Open Box LX is often the fastest and cheapest swap. It uses the same footprint, wiring, modules and spares you already know, so there's nothing to redesign.
Every UPS we sell, New or Refurbished, gets brand-new batteries and is load tested before it ships, and complete UPS units carry a 1-year GreenlightUPS warranty. Popular frames include the SYA16K16P tower, the SYA16K16RMP rack and the compact SYA8K8P mini tower. See the full range on our Symmetra LX page.
Option 3: Move to a current platform
When it's time to leave the LX behind, there are two realistic paths.
Smart-UPS Modular Ultra (APC's official replacement)
Schneider lists Smart-UPS Modular Ultra models as the replacement for each LX, for example the SRYL10K15XLT18 for the SYA8K8P and the SRYL15K15XLT18 for the SYA16K16PXR. It keeps the LX's modular, scalable, N+1 idea, runs on lithium-ion batteries, and is a current product with full factory support. It's the closest like-for-like move if redundancy inside one cabinet matters to you. If it is the right fit for your site, GreenlightUPS can get one for you.
APC Smart-UPS SRT 8kVA or 10kVA
If you don't need internal N+1 redundancy, a single online SRT is often simpler and cheaper. The SRT is also double-conversion, has hot-swappable batteries and supports extended-run packs. One thing to plan for: the SRT 8K and 10K run at 208/240V, so if your LX feeds 120V equipment, you'll need a model with a step-down transformer, such as the SRT8KXLT-5KTF or the SRT10KRMXLT-5KTF2. See our APC Smart-UPS SRT range.
Whichever way you go, size the new UPS from your real load, not the LX's nameplate. Many LX systems were bought with room to grow that was never used, and others now run at the edge. Our UPS sizing guide walks through it, and our installation team can handle the swap.
How to decide
| Your situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| LX is healthy, load fits, only batteries are old | Keep it: replace SYBT5 modules |
| One power module or the intelligence module has failed | Keep it: core exchange the failed module |
| Frame damaged, or you need a second identical system | Refurbished or New Open Box LX |
| The frame is sound but batteries and modules are all aging | Revitalization package (SYBT5s, SYPM4KPs and symim5) |
| You want N+1 redundancy and a current, factory-supported product | Smart-UPS Modular Ultra |
| You don't need N+1 and want a simpler single unit | Smart-UPS SRT 8kVA or 10kVA (with transformer for 120V loads) |
| Budget is tight and the site can't take downtime now | Keep the LX running, plan the replacement for a scheduled window |
Before you call: what to have ready
- The model number from the label (for example SYA16K16P or SYA8K8RMP)
- What the display shows: faulted battery or power module positions, and any alarms
- How many battery and power modules are installed, and whether you have extended-run frames
- Your current load in watts or kVA (the display shows it)
- Whether you want parts only, on-site service, or ship-in repair
FAQ
Is the APC Symmetra LX discontinued?
Yes. Schneider Electric has discontinued the Symmetra LX, with end-of-commercialization dates that vary by model (for example, SYA16K16P on Aug 8, 2026). After-sales service and spare parts continue past that date.
What replaced the Symmetra LX?
Schneider lists the lithium-ion Smart-UPS Modular Ultra as the replacement. For sites that don't need internal N+1 redundancy, an APC Smart-UPS SRT 8kVA or 10kVA online UPS is another common choice.
Can I still get batteries and parts for a Symmetra LX?
Yes. GreenlightUPS stocks SYBT5 battery modules, SYPM4KP power modules and symim5 intelligence modules, and we build and reprogram SYBT5 communication boards in-house.
How often should Symmetra LX batteries be replaced?
Plan on about every 3 to 5 years in a cool room, and sooner in a hot one or after frequent outages. Replace the modules the UPS reports as faulted.
Can you service a Symmetra LX I bought somewhere else?
Yes. Our technicians service Symmetra LX systems nationwide, including units bought elsewhere, and ship-in repair is available.
Should I replace my Symmetra LX now?
Not necessarily. If the frame is healthy and your load fits, replacing batteries and any failed modules is usually the lowest-cost option. Plan a replacement when several modules fail at once, your load changes, or you're refreshing the room.
